Soul vs Body in Jainism: Understanding Your True Self
The most fundamental realization in Jain philosophy is the absolute distinction between the Soul (Jiva) and the Body (Ajiva/Pudgala). Ignorance of this distinction is the root cause of all suffering in the world.
The Nature of the Soul (Jiva)
The soul is eternal, formless, and inherently conscious. Its true nature is infinite knowledge, infinite perception, and infinite bliss. It is the 'knower' and the 'experiencer'. The soul never dies; it only changes bodies.
The Nature of the Body (Ajiva)
The physical body is made of matter (Pudgala). It has form, color, smell, and touch, but it has no consciousness. It cannot feel, think, or know. The body is merely a temporary vehicle that the soul uses to interact with the physical world.
The Grand Illusion (Mithyatva)
Because the soul and body are so closely bound together by Karma, we mistakenly identify ourselves as the body. We say 'I am sick' or 'I am tall', but the soul is neither. Realizing 'I am a pure soul, separate from this body' is the first step to liberation (Samyak Darshana).

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to the soul after death?
The soul leaves the physical body and immediately takes a new body (rebirth) according to its accumulated Karma, unless it has destroyed all Karma, in which case it achieves Moksha.
